The Mount
Velez Region is located in the south-central part of the
Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The three
largest communities in the Mount Velez Region are
Blagaj, which is located near the source of the Buna
River; Nevesinje, which is located in a secluded
mountain valley; and Podvelezje which is situated below
the summit of Mount Velez.
Blagaj
has a fascinating history and offers a variety of
authentic cultural experiences. Blagaj has a
seperate chapter in this guide. The entire region is a
rich agricultural area that not only grows delicious
fruits and vegetables, but also highly sought herbs and
aromatic plants.
To the east side of the towering peaks of Velez Mountain lies the highland community called Nevesinje. The vast fields, dotted with beautiful lakes and rivers, are a nature lovers paradise. Ideal for hiking, walking, mountain biking and fly fishing this area is just beginning to realize its tourism potential. The ancient villages are not only preserved in their original form but are amongst the few highland communities that are still thriving in the Herzegovina region. Nevesinje offers a wonderful off the beaten track break just an hours drive from Mostar. Seek and one shall find.
